Cultures of Thinking – Parent Seminar

12 September 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Invitation:

Stuartholme is pleased to invite current and future parents to the Cultures of Thinking – Parent Seminar held in the Theatre on the 12th of September.  Our guest speaker, Ron Ritchhart, will discuss with our community his work on Making Thinking Visible as well as sharing 9 strategies which parents can use at home to support their daughter’s learning.  Parents who are curious about how their daughter is being taught to value thinking should register for this event and we look forward to seeing you at the seminar.

Further information:

For the previous 18 months many of our teaching staff have been engaged with professional development under the expert direction of Dr Ron Ritchhart, senior researcher at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education in his ground breaking work on the Cultures of Thinking through Making Thinking Visible.

The Cultures of Thinking Project is an initiative which places as its core value a simple statement for educators to consider – “who are our students becoming as thinkers and learners as a result of their time with us?”.  Education in Australia and throughout much of the world has a teacher focus on having their students’ complete tasks and assignments which is described quite often as “work” to our students and parents.  The research conducted by Ron and his team is directed towards how to make a classroom a place which is designed to developing thinking and understanding instead of completing work.  Our teaching staff have and are continuing to place the promotion of thinking in the classroom as a high priority by creating opportunities for students to think and by making thinking visible.

Ron’s research is classroom based and is underscored by the belief that teaching is a complex art and science that must be understood in each differing context.  The central theme of Ron’s work is that learning must be accomplished through research based best practise.  The work from Harvard on the Cultures of Thinking has a strong international uptake but Stuartholme is the first girls school in Queensland to take on this learning and apply it in the classroom.  Ron has produced many videos, scholarly articles and books on best practices related to teaching for understanding, creative and innovative teaching, and the use of thinking routines.

The education professionals at Stuartholme are enthusiastically engaged with learning more about how to make sure that a student’s learning is not only viewed in terms of academic achievement on assessment but the development of young people who can think, analyse, create and operate independently once they leave us.  The parent seminar is the opportunity for our community to hear from a world renowned expert in education and to gain an understanding of how learning is valued in their daughter’s classroom and how they can support her thinking at home.  Parents who are curious about how their daughter is being taught to value thinking should RSVP by submitting the form below and we look forward to seeing you on the 12th of September.
